Adding new Front End Severs into Lync 2013 Enterpeise pool

$

Hi,

We have Lync Server 2013 Enterprise pool consist of 5 Front End Servers, we are planning to add two more servers into pool.

I know the steps and process how to add server into pool. But I appreciate any guide line, precaution, best practice while doing this ? as this pool is in Production.

Also when i add new servers into topology, will there be any service interruption?

I understand topology change will not have any effect but as soon as Lync services started on new FE server, new routing group will be created and users will be balanced across all FES?

should i be doing this change out of hours?

Cheers…..

Lync in-band provisioning with MOC 2007 R2 Clients

Hi,

We have coexist environment with Lync Server 2013 with OCS 2007 R2. All users homed on Lync pools but 95 % of users using MOC 2007 R2 clients and 5 % using Lync 2013 client.

On Lync server, we have made some changes on Client policy and conferencing policy. I can see the changes applied to some of users using Lync client. But changes are not applied to all users using MOC 2007 R2 Clients and some of users using Lync 2013 clients.

  1. If user homed on Lync pool and using MOC 2007 R2 client, Will the MOC 2007 R2 client honor Lync in-band provisioning policies ?
  2.  If user homed on Lync pool and using Lync 2013 client, will the GPO setting override in-band provisioning policies?
  3. Do I need to configure GPO settings for all users using MOC 2007 R2 client and in-band provisioning for all users using Lync 2013 client even all users home on Lync 2013 pool.

Cheers…

Edge server failure in a pool with multiple edge servers, what is user experience?

$

In scenario where I have a single edge pool with 2 edge servers, what is user experience if one of the edge servers that user is having active session fails.

I'm testing my deployment and wanted to compare to see if my configuration works as expected.

What happens to audio, video, IM?

I did my own testing and had following results:

This is in more detail what happens:

  1. Session with IM and screen share is established
  2. Edge server that is brokering session is restarted
  3. External client looses connectivity for 2-4 seconds and reconnects. IM screen stays open but screen share is lost.
    • Internal client cannot reach external client if IM contact is attempted. Following error message is received: "We couldn't send this message because username is unavailable or offline"
    • External client sends IM and on Internal client this opens new IM window that works as expected.

It seems to me that in case of edge server failure all existing sessions will be reset. Is that what I should expect.

My external edge services are DNS load balanced.

Hello All,

We are in the process of building our own Hosted Lync as a cloud service and are in the market for someone who can help us design the infrastructure for it. Suggesting either Hyper V or VMware but we need someone who has experience with Hosters who have built their cloud service offering be it hosted exchange, hosted Lync or Hosted Pbx etc.

Pls email me at rojeleye@connectitnet.com as soon as possible.

Lync Reverse Proxy IIS HTTP 404 Error

$

Hello,

I've been researching this for a few days and I'm not feeling I'm making much headway and I'm unsure where I need to go to troubleshoot any further.  Anyway, my issue is I've been unable to get the reverse proxy working correctly and I feel it's a simple issue on the reverse proxy server.  All I ever get is 'HTTP 404 Not Found' webpage error for my meet.domain.com.  No issues internally only externally from my network.  If I remove my server farm I still get the 'HTTP 404 Not Found', which makes me believe it's not actually going out and getting the information from the FE server.

I've followed the procedure's through various websites on setting up the meet.  I've set up the server farm, pointed the server farm to my internal FE IP Address, and made my changes for:

1. URL Rewrite

2. Caching

3. Proxy

4. Routing Rules.

5. Have my SAN certificate from a public CA added that includes:

A.  FQDN for External Web Services

B.  meet.domain.com

C.  dialin.domain.com

D.  lyncdiscover.domain.com

6. External DNS records for meet, dialin, and lyncdiscover point to the External Facing Interface of the Reverse Proxy.

7.  External DNS record for FQDN for External Web Services Points to the Edge Server

Here is one of the links I've used: <http://wiki.sangoma.com/Configuring-the-Reverse-Proxy-Server-for-Lync-Express-20>

What I noticed:

1.  Internally no issue going to meet.domain.com

2.  Externally - HTTP 404 Not Found

3.  If I remove the server farm for meet.domain.com, I still get the 'HTTP 404' error.  This makes me believe there is something not quite working with the reverse proxy but I'm not sure what I may be missing

4.  I can ping the FE server from the Proxy Server after setting up the static routes (and vice versa)

My Lync Environment

1 FE Server

1 Reverse Proxy Server

1 Edge Server

Any suggestions or thoughts that could be provided would be greatly appreciated.  I'm hoping I just missed a simple step somewhere.

Can't Enable CSUser via PowerShell

Hello Lync experts,

When I try to enable an AD user using the following command from the Lync PS Prompt:

Enable-CsUser -Identity "cc99" -RegistrarPool "lync.anglia.dev"  -SipAddress "sip:cc99@anglia.dev"

It fails with error:

Enable-CsUser : Management object not found for identity "cc99"

But I can see and enable the user from the Lync Server control panel using the same account.

Any ideas? This was working a couple of weeks ago...

Many thanks,

Lync Skills search with SharePoint in a different forest

$

Hypotehtical question - we're just wondering if this will work and what it would look like before we commit to something with a customer - there is potentially more than one scenario!

Scenario 1: We are planning to deploy Lync in a resource forest as a service provider, the customer has SharePoint deployed onsite in the same domain as their user accounts, does anyone know if skill search will work if we put a forest trust in place and if there are any gotchas?

Scenario 2: We are planning to deploy Lync in a resource forest, the customer has a user account domain onsite, and SharePoint is hosted by another service provider elsewhere.  Will skill search work via a forest trusts and are there any gotchas?

Scenario 3: We are planning to deploy Lync in a resource forest as a service provider, user accounts reside in one forest and the the customer has multiple SharePoint all in different forests (different sets of users have their mysites deployed in different SharePoint farms).  Will skill search work via a forest trust(s) and are there any gotchas?

Thanks

Nathan

lync mobility and HTTP authentication test failed. Is reverse proxy required?

$

I currently have the following setup.

1 x 2013 edge server lync1.local.com
has 3 dmz ips for external names
has 1 internal ip

2 x 2013 std front end servers lync2 & lync3.local.com

Ive read that in 2013 the mobility service is installed automatically on the front end servers and i do see it running on both.

All my clients can connect from the windows and mac clients(internally and externally) but not from phone or windows app store client (internally or externally)

running the exchangeconnectivity test on the website i get the following error

Testing HTTP authentication methods for URL https://lyncdiscover.external.com/Autodiscover/AutodiscoverService.svc/root/user.
 HTTP authentication test failed.

Additional Details

A Web exception occurred because an HTTP 404 - NotFound response was received from Unknown.
HTTP Response Headers:
X-MS-Server-Fqdn: lync1.local.com
Connection: close
Content-Length: 64
Content-Type: text/plain
Server: RTC/5.0
Elapsed Time: 427 ms.

After some reading I notice that many people refer to a reverse proxy when dealing with mobility.

I do not have a reverse proxy server installed. Is this required for the mobility to work correctly? I cant just use the edge server?

Thanks in advance for any help.

OAuthTokenIssuer cert not installing

$

I'm having problems installing the OAuthTokenIssuer certificate on my single Lync 2013 FE server. I was running Lync 2010 when I lost my Edge server. At the recommendation of someone on this forum I began building my 2013 Standard environment rather than rebuild the 2010 Edge. My DC is Server 2008 R2 and my Lync 2013 FE (virtual & a member server) and Edge (physical & not a member of the domain) are 2012 R2, if that matters. Here's what I've done.

  • Clean, virtual install of Server 2102 R2 for Lync 2013 FE
  • Installed Lync 2013 as indicated in the TechNet Virtual Labs; all went well
  • I'm able to see both the old 2010 and new 2013 environment in the pool
  • I successfully completed the first two steps in the Deployment Wizard
  • I successfully installed the Default Certificate in Step 3
  • The OAuth step indicates it has completed successfully for both the requesting and installation of the certificate, but I get no green check mark
  • I have viewed the OAuth certificate from my DC and it looks right
  • I have exported/imported the DC's certificate into both the Trusted Root (already there) and Intermediate Certification Authorities of the Lync 2013 FE server, then re-ran the Certificate Wizard; same result
  • As indicated in other threads about this issue, while installing a self-signed cert got the green check mark the FE service will not start; I've removed this cert

I peer of mine (who is much more experienced in certificates than I) and I have pounded the Internet for two days and read everything we've come across; nothing resolves this. I would appreciate any assistance on getting this cert installed!

How to unattended deploy Lync Server 2013 administrative tools

$

Hi all,

I'm trying to deploy the Lync Server 2013 administrative tools unattended but it seams not to be such easy as with other Microsoft products.

I have looked for Lync Server setup command options/Switches but didn't find anything.
Currently the only way it really works is by manually installing the administrative tools using normal deployment wizard.

I have obsorved that the wizard then executes in the backgroud (not transparent) a set of different tasks like preparation tasks, installs some MSIs from the setup folder (like SharedManagementObjects.msi, SQLSysClrTypes.msi) and it copies the Lync Powershell Module locally.

I'm trying to find a way where I can deploy only this Lync 2013 administrative Tools on a set of Administrators Workstation (Windows 7 clients) and on some Windows Server 2012 R2 Management Servers by using for example a Powershell script or any other way ... important is that I can install them unattended and distribute them via existing software distribution tool.

Is there really no way to install them unattended?

Lync Internal Client in NAT ( PAT ) to Front end server

$

Hi ,

We have a scenario where we need to PAT one particular office to connect to Lync server. All communication from internal LAN will exit the router as single IP and will hit Lync front end servers.

I would like to understand whether this is a supported scenario or Lync support peer to peer communication for internal communication.

If any work around, Please let me know

Thanks In Advance

OWA Integration not working with Exchange 2013 and Lync 2013 (with UCS enabled)

$

Hi guys,

I have a system landscape that was migrated from Windows 2008 R2 (as AD) with Exchange 2010 and existing Lync 2013 Installation. Lync Integration with OWA was working fine in that configuration.

After the AD was migrated to Windows 2012 R2 and Exchange was migrated to 2013, there are some problems with OWA Integration for users hat have UCS enabled (that is my guess). All Systems are installed in german language.

For testing I created a new user in AD, Exchange and Lync and I can use Lync in OWA without any problems.
But when I log in to Lync Rich-Client with that user, after a few minutes I got logged off and on again (because there were some changes in my contact list; the UCS enablement, I guess) -> after that the Default Contact Group in Lync is named "Other contacts" (was "Andere Kontakte" before) and I cannot login for Lync with that user in OWA anymore (this is reproducible; delete user from Lync, delete contact list in Outlook, try again).

However I can still login with users that have never used Lync 2013 Rich-Client (i.e. Domain-Administrator), so it is not a General Lync-OWA-Integration problem.

I did some testing, but I am not able to find a solution.

When I enable UCMA-Tracing with OCSTracer I get the following error message:

(sorry, don't know how to get the output in english)

However I also get the above error 480 also for the Domain Administrator user (which has never started Lync 2013 and should not have UCS enabled?).

Any ideas on this?

Thanks in advance!

Lync 2013 HA and Features

$

Hi,

Im currently working with my client to upgrade their 2010 Lync environment to Lync 2013 with Enterprise voice.

The existing environment is very basic with a 2010 FE pool with only one server (no idea why they didn't just go for Standard ?!), in addition to this there is a single edge server providing external access and federation services.

So I have my design document pretty much their with regards to 2013 and introducing enterprise voice. Its designed for 1000 users and HA is a requirement. They only have one datacentre so DR is not an option.

My solution consists of a single FE pool with 3 enterprise edition servers, 2 Mediation servers, 2 Edge servers and a SBC to connect to the contact centre which is staying on the old phone system for now. VOIP will be provided by an external SIP provider. We will be taking advantage of DNS load balancing for FE and Edge access and using a reverse proxy solution to load balance HTTP/HTTPS traffic. The customers DB team wish to deploy a 2 node SQL 2012 Cluster as opposed to mirroring so I am taking their lead on that.

Ive recently been reading about pairing Lync 2013 Standard edition. Would that provide the same (or similar) resiliency to the solution I have proposed? Also for the amount of users I am talking here, do I even need to separate the mediation server role from the front end?

One final question, can the backend SQL DB, monitoring and archiving DB be located on the same SQL server?

Thanks in advance!

Lync Web App 2013 external URL wrong

$

Getting frustrated.  Hope someone can help.  Everything on the new 2013 server seems to be working except the LWA external URL.   The External web services FQDN was servername.domain.local by default when viewed in the topology builder.  I changed it to desiredname.domain.com, saved and published the topology.  The warning I got when publishing stated that I had to re run setup on both the old (2010) and new (2013) servers.  So I did, several times.  Also did iisreset on both and eventually rebooted both.  Nothing seems to have helped.  When a meeting organizer sends a meeting link for LWA outside the organization, the link redirects to the browser tohttps://servername.domain.local which obviously isn't going to work.  How do I get this external FQDN to stick?

Thanks in advance.
