Lync Server Update Process

Customer has 4 Lync sites deployed. One site is really just for DR and the "Main Site" has the Monitoring reports deployed, which capture for all the sites. Do we need to update the Main Site first or can we do other sites first? Our concern was that we didn't know if updating the other sites would somehow break the Monitoring reports / performance reports in the main site.

Hi!
Is this still a problem? I have the latest Lync phone edition on my Polycom phones.

Is reverse proxy necessary for Lync hybrid deployment?

$

We currently have a midsize (roughly 10k users) on-premises Lync 2013 deployment. This is a rather new deployment as we migrated from OCS 2007 R2. Currently users only use it for IM; there is no calling, screenshare, conferences or any other features in use. Further, the users also access Lync only from the corp network or over VPN. There is absolutely no external access.

Our plan is now to set up hybrid with Lync Online (LYO) as we already have an O365 tenant with Exchange Online and E3 licenses which includes LYO. We are not going to offer users any features other than IM until the migration to LYO is complete. Further, our intention is to give users off-network access to Lync only after they've migrated to LYO. There will never be any external access for users to Lync On-premises.

For this usage scenario, we want to set up Lync hybrid using an Edge Pool. I have been going through various sources of information and would like clarity on whether there is a technical need to have a reverse proxy in our edge network to set up hybrid or if the reverse proxy is not necessary in our usage scenario and if we would be able to set up hybrid and migrate our users in a phased migration to LYO without using a reverse proxy.

It seems we can pull this off as we only use IM and do not have plans to enable external user access to Lync on-premises but I would like to confirm from the more experienced Lync admins. If there are any visible downsides of not using a reverse proxy in our usage scenario, I would very much like to know.

Appreciate all help.

Mohsin Abbas.

Lync Server Centralized Logging Service Agent Service was unable to convert etl trace record(s) to cache record(s) due to missing message formats and lost these record(s) permanently 33041

have a real headache right now with centralized logging.    I was wondering if this was a known issue AND if there was a workaround for it.

Lync Server Centralized Logging Service Agent Service was unable to convert etl trace record(s) to cache record(s) due to missing message formats and lost these record(s) permanently

Cache file path: C:\Windows\ServiceProfiles\NetworkService\AppData\Local\Temp\Tracing\CLS_WPP_03-23-2015-13-37-53.cache
Missing message format(s): 2
68fdd900-4a3e-11d1-84f4-0000f80464e3(66)
68fdd900-4a3e-11d1-84f4-0000f80464e3(64)
Cause: Lync Server Centralized Logging Service Agent uses default.tmx file to convert ETL records to binary cache file records. If it can't find the message format information for a record it will be unable to determine the data types of the insert data for the record and the insert data will be lost. This can happen if the default.tmx file is out of sync with respect to the code generating the .ETL records.
Resolution:
Verify that default.tmx file is current and update the default.tmx file if necessary. Check if there are any private bits installed causing default.tmx to be out of sync

So, it appears that there are two locations for the default.tmx file as follows:

  • C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Lync Server 2013\Tracing\defailt.tmx
  • C:\Program Files\Microsoft Lync Server 2013\Debugging Tools\default.tmx

I think that the one in debugging tools is the version as per the Lync management tools that you have installed.   The one located in Common is per the patch level that you have.

Either way, you can SET  which directory that you want by using the "set-CsClsConfiguration -TmfFileSearchPath %path%" command.    I have done this, and ensured that the most up-to-date default.tmx file is in there - I have disabled/reenabled the logging - i have restarted the service itself.

The conversion of the ETL files is not happening, thus my %TEMP%/Tracing is empty thus - it appears that I have no logs available to troubleshoot my issues.

Anybody have any ideas or suggestions how to resolve EVENT ID 33041 LS Centralized Logging Agent?

weird cert prompt

still working on some lync 2013 issues for mobility.  lync mobile is working for external users coming into our network though the proxy except i'm at a loss to a cert prompt.

when setting up a new mobile device using lync 2013 mobile, after entering credentials, I get prompted for:  Lync is attempting to redirect your to 'issued by thawte SSL CA -G2 and our external web url" which is correct.  I also get a second prompt for the same exact thing.  Then I get something weird.  I get a third SSL cert prompt stating:
Lync is attempting to redirect to:
Issued by: acquia.com
subject *.acquia-sites.com
expires 2010
sig algorithm: SHA1withRSA

No one knows what this is or how it is in our environment.  Any idea???

If I continue thought the prompts, It connect fine.  We are having issues with internal network mobile devices and I'm not sure what this is, nor do any of our other folks.

Has anyone else ever seen that???

Additional Lync Meeting Configuraiton Policy

$

Hi, I just want to preface this with I am new to Lync and I’ve tried to track down a solution already but I am having no luck.

We are trying to setup a separate Meeting Configuration setting in Lync so we can test the options available before we push it out to our users. We currently have one site that we are using that has the current default settings.

In essence, this article sums up what we are looking to do but on premise.
http://community.office365.com/en-us/f/166/t/313103.aspx

It seems that there is not really a way to break it down unless we create a new site or pool, but since we only have one site and one pool, I don’t see how this is an option.

I cannot find a way to set this up for testing, so I’m looking for some help.

Thanks.

Changing from DNS LB to F5 HLB

We have Lync 2013 FE Pool in co-existence with Lync 2010 pool with DNS Load Balancer. As we are planning to deploy Lync 2013 Edge pool with F5 HLB, we are thinking to move Lync 2013 FE pool from DNS LB to HLB. Is there any downside by changing DNS LB to HLB? What is the best process if we decide to move away from DNS load balancer for Lync 2013?

Thanks in advance for your help...

Decommission Lync 2010

$

Hi

I have just upgraded a Lync 2010 Standard system to 2013. The cms is moved to 2013 and I have uninstalled cms on the 2010 server. The users and conference data is moved to 2013. Therefore, my last step is to decommission the 2010. Before I procedure with this in the Topology, I notice two things. 1. When I use the command Get-CsSite the old 2010 shows as register and so on. But if I use Get-CsService the new 2013 is primary and in Topology all points to new cms in site. Howe come Get-CsSite point to 2010? The other thing is when I open up Control Panel the old and new URL is given. Does the URL disappear when 2010 removed in Topology?

Best Regard

Daniel

Changing client license type from PLUS to ENTERPRISE

$

After running the Get-CsClientAccessLicense command I see that a few users are showing up with a PLUS license while most have ENTERPRISE or STANDARD licenses.     How are they granted a PLUS license?   Other queries show that no users are enabled for enterprise voice. Some are enabled for PSTN dial-in but they do not show up as a PLUS license.

Why are they getting the PLUS license and how do I change it to ENTERPRISE?

February CU and CMS?

After installing february CU:

http://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3031065

I noticed that the XDS database is at a lower version than exepected even though the guide says that you should not need to run

"Install-CsDatabase -CentralManagementDatabase "

If you have any previous CU installed.

I can also see here that the version of the XDS database should change after february CU.

http://blogs.technet.com/b/dodeitte/archive/2013/07/02/how-to-verify-if-lync-server-2013-database-updates-completed-successfully.aspx

If I run install-csdatabase -central... on my testsetup I get the correct version on XDS as well.

Is there something missing in the guide for this CU?

Event id 3039 Lync 2013 internal OAuth Certificate

Hi,

Trying to install Lync Server 2013 on WS2012.

I'm trying to create and assign a certificate for OAuthTokenIssuer certificate, It says certificate assigned OK, but there is no green tick.

When I check the certificate status in mmc / Certificates, the certificate status is OK. I've tried to recreate the certificate many times, adding SAN names (sip.contoso.com), giving more permissions for NETWORK SERVICE / LOCAL SERVICE to the certificate private key permissions, but nothing helps.

Online CA is running Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 Std and works OK.

Shortly after I try to assign the certificate, I receive error in Event Viewer:

event ID 3039

Exception: System.Security.Cryptography.CryptographicException: Access denied.

SEFAUtil outputs nothing on Desktop Client

Hi everyone.

I am trying to run the SEFAUtil on a Windows 8 Desktop Client but the output is always blank.
I've installed the UCMA 4.0 runtime and the SDK on the client. I have also added SEFAUtil to the Trusted Application Pool.

The SEFAUtil is working when I run it from a Windows 2012 server with the Lync Server Deployment Wizard installed.

Requires the SEFAUtil a Lync installation or is it also compatible with a Desktop client?

How to add a third Front-End server? RTCSRV not starting!

$

Hello!

I'm trying to add a third front-end server on a server 2012 R2 OS. I have read many blogs and on Technet about restarting the servers one at a time otherwise RTCSRV will not start. The problem is that I never get the chance to reboot them one at a time, once I publish the topology the Topology Builder says in the last step, reseting pool for <Pool01.domain.com> and RTCSRV stops on both of my FEs and don't go up again. I have tired Reset-CsPoolRegistrarState with both ServiceReset and the QuorumLossRecovery option and restarted but the services won't come up!

So it always ends up with that I remove the third FE from the topology and reset the pool and reboot and it comes up again.

I also see this in the eventviewer, Source: Schannel

A fatal alert was generated and sent to the remote endpoint. This may result in termination of the connection. The TLS protocol defined fatal error code is 10. The Windows SChannel error state is 1203.

What am I doing wrong?

Can run Test-CsLisCivicAddress -UpdateValidationStatus

$

Reposting this since my original post seems to have gone stale..

This was working just a couple of weeks ago, while our Lync deployment expert was here (naturally.)  But now it doesn't seem to work.

I needed to update one of the locations in our LIS database.  It's a field office that moved three doors down, so the street number changed.  Anyway, I removed the old entry and recreated it with the new address; no problem there.  We're partnered with 911 Enable, so I needed to run Test-CsLisCivicAddress -UpdateValidationStatus.  No go.

I verified that I have the right credentials, and even tried running it using our deployment experts account. I also tried running it with a specific address instead of the entire list, but got the same error.  Our deployment expert ran the same command in his own environment (not ours, but he's also partnered with 911 Enable), and it ran no problem.  Consequently I have to assume that the problem isn't on 911 Enables side.

Has anyone seen this before?

Thanks in advance!

Failed to Find SQL Service

When running the Lync 2013 Deployment wizard and running Step 2 Setup and Remove Lync Server Components, I get the following error "Failed to find SQL Service. Make sure that SQL Server Service (instance name LyncArchiving) is installed in machine<machine name>.  This also occurs for instance LyncMonitoring.  After searching for a solution, it was suggested that it could be fixed by running the Topology Builder and unchecking the Archiving and Monitoring features.  I did that and then published the topology again.  Got same error. Any suggestions?

Hi,

We are planning to setup new lync 2013 standard edition server.

We want to archive all the chats and shared file for complainance.

Can someone tells me that whether we need new dedicated server for SQL database or sql express can support the same or we need to install SQL on the same front end server.

As per the lync 2013 planning tool its showing me only 1 standard server but there no metion about the sql license or version or if separate sql server will be required.
