Lync 2013 Site Resiliency

$

Hi All,

We currently have Lync 2013 with HA and want to implement a DR site for full redundancy.

Primary site current setup - Enterprise pool with two front end servers, one SQL backend and two edge servers. There is a SIP trunk for enterprise voice.

I read that the recommended method is two have 3 FE servers.

So if we are going for a DR site what would be the best method.

1.Adding another FE two primary site with another SQL server for mirroring and Standard edition pool to DR site with backend db server.

or

2. two FEs with SQL mirroring in primary sites and the same setup in DR site as well.

What about the SIP trunk in DR site ?

Also want to know that the failover between primary site and DR is automated or not

Regards,

Kanishka.

What effect does the option "Enable purging of archiving data" have on Lync items archived to Exchange?

CsClientPolicy - Address Book Availability. Web Search Only vs Web Search and File Download

I've been working with a pilot deployment of our Lync 2013 environment including Edge/Proxy Servers.  I am preparing to deploy Lync to the rest of our company very soon.

One thing that I noticed was that we seem to have a lot of issues with the Lync Address book.

1) It takes a day or two for new users or existing users signing into a new client to see the address book without a reg hack.  It appears as if this workaround is not available for MAC users.

2) Some MAC users are never able to see the address book.

3) The address book contents are often corrupted by changes such as to the SIP address and take days or longer for a fix to apply to clients after a new address book is generated.

4) The offline address book contents on users MACs and PCs often becomes corrupted.

So I found that it is possible to set the Address Book Availability to  Web Search Only in the CsClient policy.  This seems to help with all of these issues.  I haven't been able to find a good explanation online regarding how these changes affect performance, how specifically these two differing protocols work and what if any downsides that I can expect from such a change.

Does anyone with knowledge or experience with this setting have anything to relate such as potential issues this may cause and a more technical explanation of how this setting works in comparison to File Download?

CMS database move from Lync 2010 to 2013 went well but.....

Something odd when I was done. Everything went perfectly. No errors at all and went as expected. I noticed though after everything was done and I had not yet uninstalled the CMS from Lync 2010 that two services on the Lync 2010 were stopped but in an Automatic startup state. They are the "Lync Server File Transfer Agent' and the "Lync Server Master Replicator Agent'. Thought it was odd they were both stopped. I am sure it had something to do with the CMS move and all the scripting that goes on. The rest of the Lync services are running.

I am thinking though if they were supposed to be stopped, why not disable them. Why leave them at Automatic. I am not seeing any errors or warnings at all on the Lync 2010 or 2013 servers. Application, System and Lync Server logs are clean. Everything appears to be OK.

Thing that concerns me though is when I run the Get-CsManagementStoreReplicationStatus on the 2013 FE, the databases all come back looking good with UpToDate = True but the last replication was last night (about 8-9 hours ago) shortly after I completed the procedure.

I want to just uninstall the CMS on Lync 2010 which is the last step but I want to make sure everything is OK before I do. Not sure if I should start those services. I never rebooted the 2010 server after moving the CMS. Seems if I did, those services would have tried to start. Very confused here.

Wanted to add also that I have both the above services on the 2013 FE server and they are both running. And, when I run Get-CsManagementStoreReplicationStatus -CentralManagementStoreStatus on my Lync 2013 FE, it says it is the active master and active file transfer agent so maybe that is why the services are stopped? If so, what if I had rebooted the 2010 server. Those services would have tried to start because they are set to Automatic.

I guess the real question here is how often should the Lync servers being updating their replicas with each other. We have a very small environment right now with only a few hundred users.

Publishing more than one URL in Microsoft TMG

Hi,

Currently our data center has been installed with TMG and published Lync 2013 External URL with single internal NIC and one External NIC.

Is it possible to publish Exchange External URL with the same internal NIC and External NIC?

Cisco Netgear alternatives

We are currently using Lync from a hosting provider over a company network with a ASA Cisco 5505 and a Netgear FS728TP (old 10/100) switch with little or no success. Cisco is to be phased out as supplier and we are also looking for a replacement of the switch en dlink WAP. The newer Gigabit version of the Netgear switch, FS728TPS looks like a viable device for supporting a Lync enabled network. Has anybody experience with Netgear devices and Lync, any suggestions for the Cisco replacement are also welcome?

Server returning Internal for Lyncdiscover instead of External

Hi,

I am faced with problem of lyncdiscover returning Internal web address instead of External web address. I have read through so many other questions that are similar to this but there was no solution to my own problem. My CsMCXconfig is set to external. When i use lync connectivity tester, it reveal the same thing when testing from external environment. I am using ARR 3.0 on win 2012 R2 as my reverse proxy.

Any help will be appreciated.

Lync Edge 2013 Certificate Assign

Hi,

I am trying to assign a Certificate to my Lync 2013 Edge Server on the Internet edge.  This certificate is signed by a recognize authority, so it should not be a problem.

Whenever I have imported the certificate in via the Lync wizard and proceed on to the Assign Certificate step, the Certificate that i have imported does not appear in the List of certificate for me to assign it to the External Edge Certificate.

I launched the MMC on the computer and add the Computer Certificate Snap-In. Unfortunatelly, if I look at the certificate icon, I do not see the little key in the icon. This sounds like I don't have the private key.

In addition, I should say that I earned my certificate as a PEM file. I tried to convert it in PFX, DER, but always with the same result. So maybe I made a mistake while converting....

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you very much

Single Site DR/HA Options

Hi

We are designing a Lync 2103 EV deployment on a single central site for approx 50 users

So it will be Standard Edition server for all Lync workloads

what are the DR/HA options - obviously we can spec another SE server and pool pair and that gives all the functionality if a single server fails - but at a cost

Is it a valid configuration to specify a SBA in the (same) central site - and use that purely for voice redundancy in the event of a server failure? (as well as the voice gateway)

if so what would be the procedure for re-homing the users to the SBA

Using Shell Move-CSUser to Migrate User Lync 2010 pool to Lync 2013 pool Fails

Using Lync Control Panel I can succussfully migrate a user from Lync 2010 pool to/from Lync 2013 pool.  Attempting to use the move-csuser cmdlet no such luck.  Both are being run on a Front End server with same user admin account so nothing different at that level. I've used all suggestions that I could find that relate to what I am seeing.  I have the highest Lync admin rights you can have so that should not be the reason and if it were then I wouldn't be able to do either way.

The commands I have used even qualified the domain controller as follows and no matter what I try it spits back an error.

Move-CsUser -Identity "sip:user@sipname.ca" -Target FQDN -DomainController xxx.domain.com

The error is Move-CSUser: Failed while updating destination pool.  At line:1 char:1  InvalidOperation  FullyQualifiedErrorID:  MoveError

Few other details but this is the main error.  It gives no indication of why.  I try a dummy user and the error comes back as i expect so the user is correct, I try a dummy Targe FQDN and the error again complains about that so I know the detail is correct.  I've run Get-CSUser to make sure name right, I've run Get-CSPool to verify I see it fine on the server.

I'm stumped.  Yes we can do via the Control Panel but for bulk this is inefficient and we are just beginning our migration and we have 10,000+ users to move and would like to do in chunks via PowerShell and capture a log to look at afterwards.

Anyone have any ideas?

How to re-install Lync 2013 Server after crash

Hi,

My Lync 2013 server was running on VM Hyper-V. Last week, the host OS was crash, and need to re-install the host OS. But luckily that VHD are on the SAN, so I can re-create VM and attach all VMs / VHDs. Most of the VMs are working ok, only one that is Lync 2013 Server. Problem is that the NIC is not working. Have tried many ways, still not success to re-activate NIC.

So I come to dead end that may need to completely re-install Lync Server 2013. But my concern is what are the safest steps to re-install. Anyone have any recommendation? Or just do the similar steps as I did for fresh installation?

Lync 2013 Deployment Requirements - One Server?

I have an organization that has an offsite Exchange Server 2010, and Windows Server 2008 R2 Domain Controller (for the Exchange Server).

I am trying to figure out what we need for hardware and Windows Server software to implement Lync 2013.  I understand that Lync 2013 cannot be put on the same server as the Exchange Server.  Can Lync 2013 be put on one Windows server?

Backend Database updates breaks Lync 2013 Mobile

$

So we just finished deploying our solution and Lync 2013 Mobile started to work on the iphone immediately after we ran all the Lync 2013 Updates from Microsoft Update. This was great until we completed the remaining steps which included updating the backend database, updating the CentralManagementDatabase, running Enable-CsTopology and then running bootstapper.

When I troubleshoot using the Lync Connectivity Analyzer, the seems to be an System.Xml.XmlException. An error occurred while parsing EntityName.

Lync Connnectivity was previously working just prior to the database updates.

All database updates say successful.

I should mention this is Lync Server 2013 Hosting Pack with Single FE, Single Edge, Single Reverse Proxy.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Do you always need to run enable-cstopology/bootstrapper after update?

$

If I look at the instructions for the January updates:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2809243/

I can see that it says you have to run "Install-csdatabase". But as far as I can see you dont need to that because the database are already at the correct level.

http://blogs.technet.com/b/dodeitte/archive/2013/07/02/how-to-verify-if-lync-server-2013-database-updates-completed-successfully.aspx

My question is if the last part about mobility and running bootstrapper is also redundant since I already have mobility enabled?

I guess the information is there since it is a cumulativeupdate so if you have not installed any of the previous updates you have to run both the database update and enable the mobility service?

lync 2013 and office communication server 2007 R2 coexistance

can i have lync 2013 server and OCS 2007 R2 server running side by side?

as i have OCS 2007 R2 running in all my sites, except one site, and i need to deploy Lync 2013 on this site, and all users in this site will be in Lync server 2013, and all other users in the forest will still be in OCS 2007 R2?

if this is supported, does the chatting and communication between both versions are fully supported, and can external lync 2013 users access their accounts through OCS 2007 Edge server, or i have to create new Edge server Lync 2013

Hi,

How will be the call flow if an External Lync user originally from Site1, trying to register as external in Site2. Will the Register request will go to Site1 Edge pool or Site 2 edge pool.

--- What will be the case when with load balancer and without load balancer.?

--- is there any blog where I can see different SIP call flows  and HTTPS call flows?
